My mouth is watering as I write this because I ran out of this crack chocolate just a few hours after acquiring it and now I have none left. I don’t even know where to start. I saw this coming. I really did. I tried to stay away from this store on Madison for as long as I could because my BMI was on the line. But I ended up going anyway. Resistance is futile.

The ROYCE’ name is familiar to many as there is a cult following in Asia. For those who are already in the cult of ROYCE’: it is now readily available in New York. For those who don’t know ROYCE’: this is your one way ticket to chocoholics anonymous. Royce made its debut in the U.S. at the end of 2012 with its Madison Ave flagship store with Bryant Park and Bleeker St locations coming later in 2013. Everything is imported from Hokkaido, Japan. You can thank Mr. Ken Romaniszyn, the genius behind Lady M Confections (reviews here and here) for bringing this crack habit ROYCE’ to New York.

Short of bringing home the whole store, I recommend starting with the signature Nama Chocolate and Potato Chip Chocolate.

ROYCE' Chocolate

Nama Chocolate ($18 per box)
ROYCE’s world famous best-selling chocolate, which comes in several flavors. Out of the handful that I have tried, my favorites are “Bitter” (dark chocolate with Hennessy) and “Au Lait” (milk chocolate with Cherry Marnier).

ROYCE' Chocolate

Each box of Nama chocolate is packed in a cooling bag with dry ice to prevent the chocolate from melting on your way home. Attention to even the smallest details like this is what makes ROYCE’ a top supplier of crack–I mean chocolate.

In terms of texture, the closest thing I can compare these to are chocolate truffle balls, except in squares and infinitely better. These literally melt-in-your-mouth. While I generally don’t like dark chocolate, I actually prefer the Nama dark chocolate to the milk chocolate! How the tides have turned on this one. Even if you don’t like dark chocolate, this is still going to be one of the best chocolates you have ever tasted. Yes, that good.

Potato Chip Chocolate (Milk Chocolate) ($17 per box)
This is the answer to one of life’s most important questions: whether to eat something sweet or savory. Now you don’t have to choose; you can have both at the same time with these chocolate covered potato chips. I’m not sure what kind of black magic ROYCE’ did on these potato chips to keep them crunchy but they succeeded.

Potato Chip Chocolate (White Chocolate)
 ($17 per box)
Also comes in white chocolate, which is just as good.

Popcorn Chocolate
Because regular popcorn is just too mainstream; you need to have popcorn covered in ROYCE’ chocolate.

ROYCE’ is a chocolate wonderland. You can’t go wrong with the Nama Chocolate and Potato Chip Chocolate and they also have a large selection of other dark, milk, and white chocolates in plain bars and with variations like liquor, fruit, green tea, and caramel flavors. The nice staff will feed you samples. Go go go.
