This is a collaboration with American Wine Merchants
Cobra Lily is the latest venture opened by the OGs that brought us Boxing Cat and Liquid Laundry. Much like the other restaurants in the group, you won’t go wrong with the food and there is a plethora of Boxing Cat beers, specialty cocktails, and wines to select from. Cobra Lily’s menu journeys across Asia from honghshao brisket baos to banh mi sandwiches, bringing it all to the heart of Xintiandi.
We also selected a wine from American Wine Merchants (AMW) to accompany the meal. AMW supplies American wines to various restaurants and also delivers directly to consumers (order on their website here).
Bloody Mary (RMB80) Sichuan peppercorn infused Ketel One vodka, chili pepper infused Ketel One vodka, lemongrass pepper infused Ketel One vodka, fresh tomato juice, spicy beef jerky, citrus
That is a lot of types of vodka. Spicy and good.
Tom Khallins (RMB75) coconut milk, coconut puree, kaffir infused gin, citrus, lemongrass infused gin
A taste of Southeast Asia in a cup.
We paired this meal with Line 39 California Cabernet Sauvignon (glass RMB100/bottle RMB500), which is a bright, fruity, and easy to drink red wine. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most common and popular wines in the world. Though it originated from the Bordeaux region, Napa has made a name for itself in making this wine. In general, Cabernet Sauvignons tend to match well with heavier meats like beef and pork, which is much of what we ate during this meal. This wine can be purchased directly from American Wine Merchants to enjoy at home.
Pork rind & vegetables with chili dip (complimentary) is provided at the beginning of the meal. The pork rinds are especially good with the chili dip.
Hand cut beef tartare (RMB98) with pho spicy broth, lime, sriracha, fresh herbs
This is a multistep process: squeeze the lime and mix the sriracha into the beef, then take a sip of pho broth after each bite.
The cabernet sauvignon is fruity and jammy and pairs quite well with red meat.
Soothing shots of warm pho broth to wash down the tartare.
Mini lemongrass carnitas banh mi (RMB78 for two) with house pickles, chicharron, tamarind aioli
My favorite item on the menu is this mini banh mi sandwich, which packs big flavors with sourness from the pickled radish and carrot and a tinge of sweetness in the braised pork.
Korean style fried chicken wings (RMB88) Hunan lamb spice, green onions, cilantro
I don’t say no to fried chicken and this one is a bit spicy and a whole lot of fried goodness.
Phat hongshao smoked brisket (RMB98) with braised tendon, daikon, mini steamed buns
A DIY bao with braised brisket, tendon, daikon, and scallions. This dish is quite heavy with the combination of meat and bun and that is where the Cabernet Savignon comes in to wash it all down with.
Be sure to dip the brisket bun back into the plate to soak up the sauce.
Foie gras “fatty” sticky rice (RMB68) with shallots, streaky bacon, shiitake mushrooms
A take on glutinous rice pumped up with bits of foie gras, which I think can be better with even more foie gras. Again, for a dense dish like this, the fruity Cabernet Sauvignon does a great job cutting through the richness.
Baba’s curry french fry (RMB68) curry dusted french fries, garlic curry mayo <late night menu>
Skinny fries are the best fries and these come with a curry twist. The curry mayo is the best part and the fries are really just a vehicle to carry the curry mayo into your mouth. Highly addictive! From the late night menu but if you ask nicely they might make it during regular hours.
“Feng Li Shu” Taiwanese pineapple cake (RMB68) Chinese almomd ice cream, financier cake, pineapple IPA compote, toasted milk & salted egg powder
A dessert inspired by Taiwanese pineapple cake. Not too sweet and not too heavy.
