Eggs on everything and eggs all day at this appropriately-named café called Egg opened by Shanghai Supper Club founder Camden Hauge. Cozy food and good coffee – great for grabbing a casual hipster bite. While prices are slightly high, they are no more than Wagas and Element Fresh, which definitely do not taste as good as this.

Option to add an egg to anything (that doesn’t already come with an egg) for RMB8. Bring cash.

Egg serves some decent coffee and I recommend the coconut cold brew (RMB32) – not pictured because this latte looked prettier.

Egg Shanghai

Avocado toast (RMB55) with feta, chili, lemon herbs, sea salt + egg (RMB8)
Recommend: yes
The essential avocado toast at Egg. I like everything about this except for the bread, which I think might be rye. “Put an egg on it” and you can soak up the runny yolk with the bread.

Egg Shanghai

Hash brown waffle (RMB70) with bacon, fried egg, tomato jam, coffee-pickled mushrooms
Recommend: yes
Real hash browns in the shape of a waffle! The tomato jam is the perfect accompaniment to the savory hash with a tinge of sweetness. First time having coffee-pickled mushrooms and they are very tasty!

Egg Shanghai

The chili-candied bacon (also available as a side for RMB20) comes with the hash brown waffle plate. It’s not the American style crispy bacon that I love but as far as non-crispy bacon goes, this is a good one. If you are looking for crispy bacon, the only one I have found so far in Shanghai is breakfast at The Peninsula lobby.

Egg Shanghai

Chinese chilaquiles (RMB68) with scallion pancake, braised pork, fried egg, luobogan
Recommend: yes
A new addition to the fall menu: Shanghai-inspired chilaquiles with scallion pancake instead of tortilla and braised pork instead of pulled chicken, which are the traditional ingredients in the Mexican version. Break the egg  yolk and stir it all up. Great mix of Asian flavors.

Egg Shanghai
Banana bread (RMB40) with peanut butter, burnt bananas, honey
Recommend: yes
Love this already but would also love to have a version with Nutella instead of peanut butter. The banana bread is available by itself as well!
