Address: 东湖路20号(近淮海中路) – 20 Donghu Rd near Huaihai Middle Rd (徐汇区 Xuhui District)
Date visited: 2013.08 for lunch
Total bill: RMB¥136 for two people
Will return: Maybe

Being a huge fan of el Willy, it only made sense for me to come to elFANTE, which is also under the direction of chef Willy Trullás. While dinner at elEFANTE can be pricey, lunch is an affordable option for those who work nearby. I am ambivalent about this place as I did not get to try many dishes this time and the dishes I tried didn’t leave an impression. Lunch mains are RMB¥68, appetizers are RMB¥58, mini dishes are two for RMB¥25, and desserts are RMB¥48.

Elephants everywhere. There are elephants on the walls. There are elephants on the tables. There is an elephant doormat. There is a giant elephant outside the restaurant, which I somehow missed  entirely and walked right past the first time. Better than cats.

Red Snapper (RMB¥68) with grilled vegetables, sumac, and sauce vierge
Recommend: maybe
Snapper was slightly overcooked. Other ingredients on the plate were okay but not memorable.

elEFANTE

Squid Ink Spaghetti (RMB¥68) with seafood, arugula, and preserved lemon
Recommend: yes
The sauce was flavorful and there was good seafood to pasta ratio as well. There wasn’t much of a distinct squid ink taste in the pasta but it was still tasty. I don’t mind this but this is not a dish that will make me come running back.
